Miko could not move. His legs shook like noodles in soup. Raku slowly whispered:
“We should run.”
“Yes,” Miko whispered back. Neither moved. The tiger walked closer. Each step felt like thunder hitting the ground. “You want to become a tiger?” the beast growled. Miko swallowed. “Yes.”
The tiger circled him slowly. “You have no claws.”
“I know.”
“No strength.”
“I know.”
“No courage.”
Miko opened his mouth… Then closed it again. Because that one hurt. The tiger stopped in front of him. “Then why pretend?” The jungle became silent. Even the wind waited for the answer. Miko looked down at his tiny paws.
All this time, he had tried to roar louder, walk tougher, look bigger. But inside? Inside, he had only been a frightened cat trying to escape himself. Finally, Miko whispered:
“Because I thought being myself was not enough.”
The tiger stared at him for a long moment. Then, suddenly, the tiger laughed. Not a cruel laugh. A tired one. “You think tigers don’t feel fear?” he said. Miko blinked. The tiger lifted one giant paw. Old scars covered it. “Courage is not born,” the tiger said quietly. “It is hunted.” The words hit Miko harder than any claw.
The tiger sat beside the river. “When I was young,” he continued, “I wanted to become a dragon.” Raku exploded laughing. “You? A dragon?” The tiger slapped him into a bush without even looking.
Then he continued calmly:
“I spent years hating myself because I could not fly.”
Miko stared at him. The great tiger looked at the moon reflected in the water. “One day,” he said softly, “I realized something strange.”
“What?” Miko asked. The tiger smiled. “A river does not become the ocean by hating itself. It simply keeps flowing.” For the first time in his life, Miko stopped wishing to be something else. The jungle was still dangerous. He was still small. Still awkward. Still incapable of roaring correctly. But maybe being small did not mean being worthless. Maybe becoming stronger did not mean becoming someone else.
Suddenly, bushes shook nearby.
Hunters.
Three men with traps and rifles stepped into the clearing. Raku panicked immediately. “We are going to die.” The tiger stood up slowly. The hunters raised their weapons. Miko’s heart pounded. This was real danger now. Real fear. The kind that crushes the lungs. The tiger prepared to attack. But before he could move, one of the hunters aimed directly at him. And without thinking… Miko jumped in front of the tiger.
Miko’s tiny body trembled in front of the rifle. The hunters looked confused. One of them lowered his weapon slightly. “…It’s just a cat.” The tiger’s eyes widened. Raku whispered from the bush:
“The stupid little sock actually did it…”
Miko was terrified. Every part of him wanted to run. His legs screamed for it. His heart screamed louder. But somehow… he stayed. Not because he had become fearless. Because something mattered more than fear. The tiger slowly stepped beside him.
For the first time, the giant beast did not look down at Miko. He looked at him as an equal. Then the tiger released a roar so powerful the trees shook like rain. Birds exploded into the sky. The hunters panicked. One dropped his rifle. Another tripped over a root.
Within seconds, all three disappeared into the darkness screaming. Silence returned to the jungle.
Miko finally collapsed on the ground. “I think I died for three seconds,” he whispered. Raku came out of the bush covered in leaves. “I died emotionally.” The tiger laughed deeply. Then he looked at Miko for a long moment. “You wanted to become a tiger,” he said softly.
Miko lowered his ears. “I know. It was foolish.”
“No,” the tiger replied. “You simply misunderstood.” The moon reflected gently on the river beside them. “A tiger is not claws,” the great beast said.
“Not teeth.
Not size.
Not a roar.”
He touched Miko’s chest lightly with one giant paw. “It is this.” Miko felt his heartbeat. Fast. Small. Alive. The tiger smiled. “You crossed the jungle carrying fear every single day… and still kept walking.”
The old beast looked toward the stars. “Many large animals die as cowards. Today, a small cat stood before death.” Miko felt something warm rise inside him. Not pride. Not ego. Something quieter. Acceptance.
For the first time in his life, he no longer hated the reflection in the water. He finally understood: The goal had never been to become a tiger. The goal had been to stop being afraid of being a cat.
Years later, travelers passing near the jungle spoke of strange things. They spoke of a clever fox who stole fruit from camps. They spoke of an old tiger who disappeared into the mountains. But most of all… They spoke of a small gray cat who walked through the jungle without lowering his head.
Some animals laughed when they first saw him. Until they looked into his eyes. Because inside them lived something bigger than a tiger. A creature very few ever become. Someone completely at peace with who they are.
